A ‘True’ Scottish Family?

I was given a project brief recently asking for images of a modern Scottish family that would work for a Scottish Government White Paper. On first thoughts this sounded very straight forward. After all, we all know what a typical Scottish family looks like, don’t we?

After conducting my usual in-depth research into what images are already available I felt confused. There were literally hundreds of thousands of ‘stock’ images available from websites, such as Getty Images and Adobe Stock. However, on further investigation this was not was was required - they were looking for something different, something less ‘polished’.

So, I started asking myself what I view as a modern Scottish family. In today’s climate of total acceptance, this could literally be anything, even to the extent that a family don’t necessarily have to be related to each other. I decided not to include children in any of my images but, instead, focus more on pets as being ‘children’. I also did not want to see a family as a young man and woman. This was the result…
