A Footie Convert

18 months ago I had never watched, let alone gone to a football match, probably much to the disappointment of my dad. However, around that time I was required to shoot some sport action shots for a course I was on. This led me to obtaining permission to shoot a Falkirk FC vs Alloa Athletic match at the Falkirk Stadium. It was an odd experience first of all to be attending a football match for the first time, but also to be right on the touchline with the players literally feet away from me. I loved it!

After I looked at what I had shot, I was really pleased with the photos and so decided to send them to the local papers. I didn't hear from the Falkirk Herald, but the Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser did.

I have now been freelancing for the Alloa Advertiser since January 2022, covering the Alloa Athletic home matches, and the occasional away game, as well as shooting a few local events for them. I can't thank them enough for giving me these opportunities.

Having gone from having no interest in football whatsoever, I am definitely an Alloa Athletic fan. These guys have done brilliantly this season and finished a fantastic fourth behind three full-time teams (Alloa are only part-time). I couldn't be prouder of them all.

Although I see myself as primarily a portrait photographer, having the opportunity to shoot live action football and events has been a wonderful education in building confidence, thinking quickly on my feet, and putting people at ease as I point a camera in their faces. These are all skills I now use in my portrait sessions whether on location or in the studio.
